What To Expect At Your Dental Implant Consultation

If you have decided that dental implants are the way to go, let’s try and pave the way a little and give you some ideas on what to expect from this point forward.

It’s very common to feel nervous about your impending consultation. But don’t be. You are here to learn more about the treatment and if implants are the best option for you. There’s no obligation and our consultations at our Edinburgh office mostly involve chatting and answering your questions.

Your consultation is the ideal opportunity for you to discuss all your individual needs and goals with our dentists at Links Dental Practice and we will be able to provide you with a clear understanding of the treatment plan and we will explain fully what to expect during the procedure.

We will run through:

  • Medical history. We will review your medical and dental history including any medications you are taking and any pre-existing medical conditions you have. We will assess your overall health to determine if any of these conditions or medications will affect the healing process of the dental implant procedure.
  • Oral examination. Next, we will check your mouth, teeth, and gums to ensure you are a good candidate for dental implants. We will be checking for jawbone density and gum tissue as this is what is required to support dental implants. We will take x-rays and scans to help with this evaluation.
  • Treatment plan. Once the evaluation is completed, we can then discuss a treatment plan and options with you. Here we will explain the procedure, number of implants, type of implant required, sedation options, estimated time frame to complete treatment, post-surgery expectations, and aftercare instructions. We will discuss your smile goals, habits, and oral health. We can answer any questions and ensure you are totally happy with the options.
  • We can run through the costs of the procedure and we will discuss all the finance options available.
  • Finally, how to prepare. If you decide to go ahead with the dental implant procedure, we will talk to you about how best to prepare for the treatment and we will also advise on pre-operative instructions looking at what to do before surgery. This might include medication instructions, any dietary requirements, and other relevant information.

We offer appointments to fit around your busy schedule and we are one of only a few practices to place dental implants using a ‘gentle dental laser’ which means faster healing, less swelling, and a more comfortable, pain free experience.

It’s normal to feel anxious or emotional during these consultations. But this is a non-judgemental zone! We are here to help you look and feel amazing by providing you with the teeth and smile you deserve.

All of the staff are always really friendly and professional. This morning I saw Moon, the Hygienist, very ably assisted by Bethany, the Dental technician. They worked together effortlessly, never bumping into each other and making the whole procedure pain free and comfortable. I never felt like I was drowning, my gums and tongue where never sucked into the aspirator, and my teeth feel great afterwards. I am really lucky to have such a talented team so close to my home.

Ed is the best dentist that I’ve ever had and I’ve had many after being given Tetracycline as a child which took the enamel from my adult teeth. He is very sympathetic to those people who are scared of the needle and drill. He works fast and efficiently whilst still allowing the patient to rest. I really can’t fault anything. He explains every procedure and helps you to make an informed decision which is best for you. He truly is the best.

My new dentist Jasmine wss friendly and welcoming.She took great trouble to check all my teeth (gently) and showed me them on a screen(fascinating) whilst explaining the work which needed to be done.Because I could clearly see my teeth..this all made sense to me.While lying back in the dentist's chair i also enjoyed watching a gorgeous travel film of Italy (no sound) which was v relaxing.I would highly recommend.

I want to extend my sincerest thanks to Sam Lockhart (supremely decent, gifted dentist), Sammy (trainee assistant who is better than most trained assistants and with a truly caring approach to her profession) and the lovely receptionist from Asturias. You chaps saved my Christmas. We never met before and we may never meet again, but this was the most positively unforgettable visit to a dental surgery I have ever had in more than sixty years. I had a very friendly chat with Louise and on the same day I met Sam Lockhart. He is an amazing dentist with a great approach to patients. I have been with this practice many years and have had excellent service. Being in Denplan I was given all the treatment I have needed. The only problem was in lock down due to the restrictions on dentists, but that is the fault of the Scottish Government and not the practice.
